To become a successful new face in the modelling industry you need many attributes beyond good looks – tenacity, patience, and determination are all important if you want to break into this notoriously competitive and fast paced industry. As well as all this, it’s absolutely crucial to ensure that you stand out in the early days.
At the start of their careers some aspiring models choose to manage themselves rather than face the prospect of applying to agencies, but the problem with this approach is that it means juggling the business side of your work with the modelling side, and when you’re starting out it’s far more advantageous to able to focus all your efforts on the job.
On top of this, when you consider that models represented by agencies tend to gain more contracts, develop their careers more quickly and obtain greater exposure and insight into the industry than those who go it alone, it makes sense to find an agency you trust.
Thousands of young women apply to modelling agencies across the UK, so when it comes to the application process you need to ensure you’re as well prepared as possible.
Bear in mind that each agency’s new model screening process is different from the next: some models mail ‘comp’ cards to agencies to get a foot in the door – this can be a good tactic for smaller agencies but the cards are not likely to be noticed by the larger ones. Another option is to make personal calls to agencies in order to get an interview face-to-face. But the most popular process is the open call, where many models attend an agency casting on one day. So if you intend to approach some agencies, understand first what approach you should take.
As you begin, if you feel you’re facing a lot of hurdles, remember that the modelling industry requires a thick skin and that this is great experience for the challenges you’ll face later in your career. If you persevere with the application process and you have what it takes to become a model you’ll find the right agency eventually; always bear in mind that modelling agencies need new faces and fresh talent on a regular basis.
